This vessel is carved from pohutukawa, featuring a hand-textured & ebonised exterior that contrasts beautifully with the smooth, natural wood interior. The very thin rim has subtly moved and distorted during drying, creating an organic, flowing lip that enhances its sculptural presence.
The bold, strong form makes it a striking statement piece, ideal for larger interior spaces where its presence can be appreciated. Its balance of dark exterior and warm interior emphasizes both the material and the craftsmanship behind the vessel.
Handcrafted in New Zealand, this contemporary wooden art vessel celebrates the character of native timber and the sculptural possibilities of hand-finished wood.
Wooden Art Vessels – Handcrafted in New Zealand
Each wooden art vessel by New Zealand woodturner Gavin Brunton is a one-of-a-kind fine art object — a balance of flowing form, and natural texture. Handcrafted on Kawau Island from storm-damaged native timbers, these sculptural vessels bring the beauty and spirit of Aotearoa’s forests into modern living spaces.
Contemporary wood art vessel – A sculptural centrepiece for modern interiors
Designed for collectors, homeowners, and interior designers seeking contemporary sculpture that feels grounded in nature, every piece combines timeless craftsmanship with innovation. Whether displayed as a statement art piece in a home or as corporate art in a reception space, each vessel captures a sense of strength and living history.
The story behind each wooden art object
My process begins with sketches — exploring forms that balance flow and tension, strength and movement. Then I seek out timbers with a story: fallen pohutukawa, ancient puriri, or storm-damaged totara — wood that might otherwise be lost or burned. Through turning, carving, and hand-finishing, I look for ways to let the tree’s natural character shape the final form.
I’ve always believed in keeping a distinctive part of the original tree visible in each piece — a knot, a grain shift, a scar — something that carries the memory of the forest it came from. In that way, every art vessel becomes both sculpture and story; a connection between the natural world and the creative process of making.
Environmentally conscious home décor
All my vessels are made by hand in small numbers, using wood sourced locally and responsibly. No trees are felled for my work — each one comes from material already destined for restorative pruning or removal. This low-impact approach ensures that my art supports both the environment and sustainable, contemporary design.
Why choose a contemporary sculpture by Gavin Brunton
- Unique character – No two vessels are ever the same.
- Durable craftsmanship – Native hardwoods are chosen for strength and longevity, developing a rich, natural patina over time.
- Natural finishes – Oil and wax blends protect and enhance the wood’s texture while remaining safe and tactile.
- Generational longevity – With care, these pieces will last a lifetime and hopefully become cherished heirlooms.
Perfect for modern art sculpture collectors, interior design décor, or anyone seeking a meaningful object that embodies both art and nature.

Care & maintenance
Minimal care is needed — an occasional dusting with a soft cloth will keep your vessel looking its best. Every now and then, a light oil or wax polish will deepen its natural sheen and colour. Each piece comes with full care instructions, so you can enjoy it for years to come with peace of mind.
Each vessel is crafted with intention and respect — a quiet celebration of form, nature, and the enduring beauty of wood.
