Light shade details

Diameter    335 mm

Height         160 mm

Wood          Pohutukawa

Turned and hand-carved from a single piece of New Zealand Pohutukawa, this large pendant light shade showcases both strength and delicacy. The exterior has been ebonised to a deep, charcoal tone, its carved texture catching the light and revealing subtle movement across the surface.

Inside, the natural warmth of the Pohutukawa contrasts beautifully with the darkened outer shell. A stitched waxed-linen repair — a quiet detail that speaks to the handmade process and the beauty of imperfection.

An artisan wooden pendant light shade that balances natural wood grain with contemporary design, perfect for interior designer décor or warm, Japandi-inspired spaces.

What’s Included

When you order one of my handcrafted pendant lights, it comes complete with:

  • Ceiling rose

All components are pre-wired, so your pendant light is ready to install right out of the box.

Wooden pendant light shades – handcrafted in New Zealand

This collection of handcrafted wooden pendant light shades brings together natural materials, simple design, and fine craftsmanship.
Each pendant is turned from a single piece of native New Zealand timber and finished by hand on Kawau Island. What began as a few pieces I made for my own home quickly grew into a small collection after plenty of requests — and I’m pleased to share them here.

The current series features a textured, ebonised exterior that contrasts with the warm, natural wood grain inside. The result is a quiet balance between modern design and natural wood lighting — a sculptural centrepiece for contemporary interiors.

Every pendant shade is made by me, New Zealand woodturner Gavin Brunton, using locally sourced timber from storm-damaged trees. These pieces bring a little of Aotearoa’s forest into your home — whether above a kitchen island or anywhere you need wooden home décor.

Design and style

These pendant light shades work beautifully in a range of interiors — from Japandi style to a clean white interior where they add warmth and contrast.
The clean lines and natural materials suit both homeowners and interior designers looking for artisan, handcrafted wood pendant lights that feel grounded and timeless.

If you’d like a matching set of wooden light shades, I can make these to order. As every piece is shaped from unique timber, expect subtle natural variation that adds to the character of the finished set.
See the Commissions page for details.

The story behind each light shade

If you look closely, you will always see a knot, a shift in grain, or a scar. These marks connect each piece back to the forest it came from. In that way, every shade is both sculpture and story — a link between the natural world and the craft of making.

Environmentally conscious design

All of my wooden light shades are made in small numbers, by hand.
No trees are felled for my work — I use only salvaged or storm-damaged native timbers. This low-impact, local approach keeps the work sustainable.

Why choose a wooden pendant by Gavin Brunton
